I'm thinking it was Performance Imagery (http://www.PerformanceImagery.com) that was out there, but I'm not sure. Mike's pics show someone in an orange vest under the starter stand and it looks like they got a shot of my close finish with Chris, so I'm hoping to see that picture...

ps
please spare us any more photo documentaries and post these photos in your own little corner that says "SPEC 944 photos here". "Picture/Video thread" title for the whole weekend that gets our hopes up to see some actual cars.

Thanks for getting us back on topic - I really don't want to know what goes on in the tent.. Weston, I use a chase cam feeding into a mini dv cam corder. Its probably no big deal but I've never spent the time to figure out IDVD or Final Cut on my Mac. I just need to find the time to do it (you'll know what I mean when you have kids....)

Ok, then it's probably just a matter of connecting your camera to the computer with a Firewire cable (aka IEEE1394) and capturing the video. I can't say for certain without having seen your setup, but you usually need a cable with a 4-pin connector on one end (for the camera) and a 6-pin on the other end (computer). I'd expect it to automatically detect when the camera is connected and turned on, because Windows does that and Macs are generally better with multimedia stuff.
I could also just borrow your MiniDV tapes for a night and make video files out them if you want, assuming they were recorded in standard mode (ie SP 60 minutes instead of LP 90 minutes). That would be really easy for me to do, and that way I'd have a full quality version of them to mix with the video from my car and Chuck's car. Let me know what you want to do...

I think the current series points leader should be required to put the rear view camera on his/her car so we can see the action play out behind the leader. That way the rest of us wanna-be racers don't have to be subjected to Chuck's "Optimism-Vision".
Of course, from Kevin's point of view, it was the "Humiliation-Vision"

That's not just motor, that's the classic "Dirks start"... He's able to be on the throttle before the green flag, which is a big advantage in low HP cars with the same acceleration. Remember my restart at La Junta (http://www.rm944.com/events/2007-06-02_03%20LaJunta/Saturday%20Main%20Race%20Restart.wmv)? That's a more extreme example, but the concept is pretty much the same... I was in the back with a little bit of a gap, so I was still on it while you guys were all slowing down approaching the start. The green flag came out right as I passed the first car (who was on the brakes!), so I never had to even let up. Being that I was already going like 10-20 mph faster than everyone else at the time, I didn't need to have much of an engine to blow by everyone on the straight.
There's obviously an opportunity for people in the back to intentionally create a gap for this purpose, which I don't think we should be doing, but more often than not, they don't have to... we're just begging for this when we don't maintain a steady speed, or steady rate of acceleration, when approaching the start. The La Junta clip is a good example... If we all speed up and then slow down right before the start, the green flag is going to come out before the guys in the back would have to slow down, so they'll just pass everyone instead. I saw the cars in front of me slowing, but I had a gap to close and knew the green was coming, so I was going to accelerate as much as I could without passing anyone under yellow. The unexpected use of the brakes by the cars in front of me made that a lot closer than I was expecting, but it still worked out.
I'm told that the "Dirks start" topic will be covered in Chuck's ramblings about "race craft" this winter...
Another option would be the "Chuck start", where you start running into other cars before the green flag even comes out, however the advantages of doing this are unclear.

is race craft anything like starcraft? if so im going to do pretty good next season.
yeah, i thought that might have been the case for the start, being caught in the middle i wouldn't have been able to tell.
One thing i notice on the starts is that im almost always equal to they guy next to me for the entirety of the gear we start in (usually 2nd) but as soon as one of us shifts up one of the cars start to pull the other, are some of you shifting early, clutch work? I used to have a fast motor (at least i thought so) but i feel its not the case anymore. (weight, valves, cat, dirty filter?) I would still be interested in doing the dyno day cause its probably all in my head.

I'd be interested to know what your compression test numbers are (mine are just a hair over 160 PSI on all 4; I'm thinking an '88 motor should be 170+ ???), but I think your motor is probably fine. The problem is that you're 100+ lbs too heavy, and are still running a catalytic converter, as well as a power steering pump, while the rest of us have ditched that stuff. I've been gradually dropping weight from mine (still 75-100lbs too heavy), I have a manual steering rack, no cat, an improved cold air intake, and I had very recently opened the motor and cleaned the combusion chamber. It was clear that I was able to gain on you and the red #24 car (super heavy) on the straights, but I had a real hard time catching anyone else... there were several times where I'd be right behind someone on a straight but couldn't gain on them at all, even though I was in their draft. Corner exit speeds also play a big part in this, especially for our low HP cars, so it's more than just a horsepower contest. It'll be awesome when several of our cars have a Traqmate and we can easily who was faster where, and why they were faster.
A dyno day is a good idea. I'd be very interested to know where we all are...

dirks is going to dyno at 95 whp and well all cry. Theres no doubting that you beat us fair and square this season, that was obvious when you held us off with street tires and consistent first place wins. I meant for it to come across that, In what ways can me, my car and I improve? you just happen to be the best example to compare against and i think things like where people are at weight, hp, technique, etc are good ways of each person knowing what they have to do to be up to par. Same reason were all getting traqmate, "why is jimmy joe beating me so bad in turn 7?"

From the CCR:
20.5.1 Rolling Start / Flying Start
During the warm-up lap the field shall align into its proper starting rows. Drivers should
take care when weaving to warm up tires (a.k.a. “scrubbing tires”). Starts will usually be
two (2) abreast. The field should come into perfect alignment on the prescribed lap ** in
the last two (2) turns before the start / finish line.

11-28-2007, 03:34 PM
Well, as the pace car driver for most of the races, I can say that the rear of the pack very rarely gets in perfect alignment, especially at Pueblo. There have been multiple instances where the cars in the back get a jump, mainly because the green comes out before turn 10.
John did a great job in the last Pueblo event of waiting until all the cars came around 10 before showing the green and I think that helped. Still, it doesn't stop someone from laying back a car length or two and trying to time it right. A car gains 2.5 feet for every MPH every second, so it doesn't take much to move up a bunch of places with a long front straight.

I'll tease Dirks about it, but I wouldn't call him a cheater, and I'm not upset about it or anything. Until we get our act together a little better on the starting formation, we can't really accuse anyone of jumping the start or hanging back and getting a run on us. That's not just a 944 issue... I've seen it with other groups too. And I'm not talking about this specific case, but just in general.
Call me crazy, but I just think we should get in better formation sooner (ie not still trying to get lined up as we exit turn 10 at Pueblo) and then pick a speed, or a steady rate of acceleration, and stick with it. I think we've all been guilty of doing something silly at some point, but I keep seeing the same two problems repeated: 1) We'll fly around a turn, but then slow down on the straight before the start, thus giving everyone behind us an advantage. If we do that, we deserve to get passed, IMO. 2) Rather than maintaining the correct distance from the car in front of us, we tend to just mirror the car next to us, so when one car lags behind, the other car copies him, and everyone behind either of them are forced to do the same thing, then they're all on the gas trying to catch back up as the green flag comes out. The guys at the very front may have done everything perfectly, but they're still being put at a disadvantage because one guy in the middle of the pack lagged behind.
Also, when we have multiple groups on the track, and each one gets their own green flag, the starter can't abort the start unless it's the very first group that has a problem. You don't want 944-Spec to be driving around in formation under yellow while AI/CMC is racing on a green track and is going to come around and lap them.
Snymo
11-28-2007, 04:17 PM
Weston,
Yes, Yes, and Yes. ;)
At Pueblo, I drive the pace car at 45 from the front straight to the exit of turn 7. At that point I'll slow down to about 30 and the cars should form up behind me and be in perfect formation before turn 9 so that turn 10 is continuation of the pace speed until the green flag drops.
Now, it's every driver's responsibility to maintain the pace and spacing to the car in front. As a racer, you want the best start you can get and you have to decide what will serve you better: being right on the guys bumper in front of you or being a car length or so back. But, as you know, it's never as simple as it sounds and something can happen and then exponentially expand through the field. I just get to watch it all from pit lane!! ;)

Why not just do standing starts as in Speed World Challenge? Is it a clutch abuse issue, the fact that the field has cars of varied power levels (as in ALMS), or safety (e.g., no rapidly accelerating cars crashing into stalled ones)?
Weston
11-28-2007, 10:17 PM
I like standing starts and wouldn't mind doing more of them, but they are a lot harder on cars, so that's why we hardly ever do them. I'm not aware of any 944-specific problems with it, except that some people are still on the original clutch (with rubber instead of springs) and probably shouldn't push their luck with it.
leggwork
11-28-2007, 10:53 PM
it is up to the starter to decide if the cars have formed up adequately but Pueblo doesn't necessarily allow the whole field to be seen before the flag has to drop.
