View Full Version : Becoming TT eligible...

So, my goal for this year was to become TT eligible by the END of the season. I'm in HPDE3 now, so as far as I understand, here are the steps I must undertake:

1) Graduate to HPDE4 and complete an event in HPDE4

2) Fill out a TT license application and submit to the Regional TT Director

3) After submittal, I must complete one event DAY of TT competition under observation at which point the Regional TT Director approves or disapproves my license.

4) After getting approval, I then send in the APPROVED application with $10 to get my license. Upon receipt of my license, I can then officially compete in Time Trials at my next event.

So, in the context of our new region and the fact that our regional TT director may not be in attendance, I want to make sure I know who to talk to and what to do in order to be most efficient about it. I will only be doing 2 more NASA events this year (La Junta and PMI), so I have 4 days of practice DURING NASA events. In between events, I will be going to PMI for open track days to hone skills and practice fundamentals as well as track sharing.

Who will be the approving authority for graduation to HPDE4? I assume it's Chuck, since he is/was the HPDE3 lead instructor. Once I get to HPDE4 (whenever that may be), then I will submit my TT application. I know Greg is the National TT Director, but who is the Regional director? Would that responsibility fall under Dave B. or Kevin perhaps? If so, then I know I will be under direct scrutiny at all times anyway! :D

THanks for the help guys. I'd love to start off next season competing in Time Trials (TTA).

Sounds like you have done your homework !
I'm sure you will have a great time working your way up to TT. The last thing I want to do is discourage you in any way ,but (you saw that coming I bet) ... you need to take it one day at a time. So to say how long it takes to be TT eligible really depends on you, your skills, and your comfort around other cars. to a lesser extent it also depends on how other people feel when your near them.

At any rate WELCOME to HPDE 3 and I am sure you will have fun working towards HPDE 4 and yes the group 3 leader (Chuck Taylor ...me) needs to recomended you to group 4 .

feel free to PM me for any specific information.

Yes, Chuck, I expect people to discourage me anyway, because no one wants someone inexperienced trying to move up too fast and making higher classes dangerous. I'm sure it happens all the time, so I don't want to be "that guy." However, I do want to compete next year, so I'm trying to do what it takes to get there without wasting anytime, but also without getting in over my head.

I will PM you with specific questions to make sure I'm working on the right things during open track days.
