I was just reading the CMC board and it appears that we will not be able to use or collect toyo bucks on RA1s in 09.

That blows. I better make my existing RA1s last till next year.

Kyle, will mine fit your car? We'll be upgrading tires/wheels/suspension (hopefully) for next year, maybe you can use mine?

Folks,

This is something that Raybob, Dave B and I are discussing now. Please don't get too freaked out just yet.

We will have more info at Pueblo - which is another reason to be sure to show up. :D

thanks

After talking to the tire tech at Miller 944-spec wil not allow ANY NEW RA-1's in the series.

it seems a shaved RA1 is faster than a R888 ...

how do you really know if it is new or used if you don't do tech until after the qual/race?

Good question .

I know because , I know that Me , dirks's , chris and ...etc etc don't have any RA1's If Dirks shows up at Pueblo with a set of RA1's that are not 3 years old , I knowthey are new.

Bottom line is , At 20 drivers/ cars in the RM region I know who has good RA1 tires and who does not.

And new RA1's are not allowed.

I have a set still to be used up but they really are 3 years old so they look near perfect but have long cycled out. Last time I ran them got me the track record at Hastings ...

The real problem is that TOYO has now said they will continue making the RA1. and some of the other regions want to continue using them.

The GREAT news for spec racing is that a shaved R888 and a full tred R888 should give the same amount of grip. The contact patch does not grow with the shaving of tred.

I don't get it... What's the point of R888's if they're just going to keep making RA-1's?

My car has on old set of RA1s that I got a great deal on used, and I have two more to mount up. With my budget that is likely what my next set will be. If that will screw up Toyo bucks for the front runners, I'll rethink that. For now, that's how I roll.....

well, when I do get around to rolling again :o Of course, I anticipate that used R888s will start becoming available too. This is a little baffling, so I'll stand by for more info.

Thank you. A posting thread is a bad way to deal with this.

I'm pretty sure the RA1 WILL no longer me maunfactured.
The 888 is replacing it as I understand.

Also, an old tire is a good tire. I actually prefer an old tire. They wear better. They slide better. I find this helps in getting the car to rotate in the corner.

In '06 I ran the entire year on one set with '00 date codes on the sidewall. No sh!t. The last one's sidewall is hanging on my garage wall. I went to the trouble of cutting the sidewall off just for a souvenir.

I suggest a thread just for RA1 swapping. Post what you think you'll have in surplus, and what you think you'll need to finish the year.

I sold 3 sets of new recently and am gonna need 2 or 3 "maypops" to finish the year.

Yep got it.

You and Scott are welcome to any thing that I have lying around.

I still have Scotts list of needed j/y parts but have not had any luck finding anything yet.

That was my understanding also, but we had a TOYO engineer (not the train driver) at Miller and he said there was no plan to stop making the RA1 ?

TOYO is moving all of there sponsorship to the R888 so I would still guess the RA1 is on the way OUT.

Guys,
Toyo is phasing out the RA-1 and shifting to the R888.

The R888 is the tire of the future and the RA-1 is the tire of the past.

For 944 spec (I cannot speak for CMC or other classes). I don't want anyone to throw away and old RA-1. Use them till they are done as we don't have the money to toss good tires in trash. There will be a point in 944 spec when RA-1's will not be allow at all. I just can't say when that will be yet.

One thing to consider is the faster you swap to R888 the faster you can learn how the tire reacts and what you need to do to optimize for it. So you will have a leg up on the stragglers trying get their last runs from the RA-1's. Once they get to runing R888 they will be trying to find thew new set-up and you will already have it.

BTW. Joe Paluch is the national rules man for 944-spec.
