I think its an announcement that we'll be racing on the prairies of where the Genoa track will be. The lap record is held by MHISSTC's Suburban.

I have great memories of PPIR, I first learned to drive my new (at the time) '03 Mustang Cobra and '01 Viper GTS at that track. I also got to clean up Ferrari parts off the track when at least one crash occured during that weekend coming off of the first turn.
I was also there for the last event ever (I think).
Now I gotta see if I can be there Labor Day weekend, race car or not.

I'm confused...I'm not a CO native, only been here a couple years, but all I've heard is that PPIR closed down several years ago. Their website is basically nothing too. Is it reopening or...?

Yes, it was closed at the end of '05 then sold, and changed hands for a second time. The new owner has been fighting contract agreements so that he can open it to the public for events.
Do you have more info on this Dave B.???

Once again you guys show why NASA RM truly rocks!
A few quick questions:
- I trust you'll have an appropriately boastful commemorative T-shirt?
- Do you have pointers to good hotels yet?
- And finally, what obscure but heavily attended festival are we competing with this time? :D

Woo hoo!!!!
We are planning a cool t-shirt
We will get hotel info ASAP but southern CO (World Arena) will be our best bet.
The Reinnasance fair is over so hopefully we are good to go!!!!!

drew that a few years ago. The only other tip is that momentum cars shouldn't bother climbing the front straight to the wall, although coming down off the oval is a whole lot-o-fun.

That is awesome, Dave, good job! I imagine you can get some pretty high (read: scary) speeds with those banked turns in the oval.
Now I really have to move back to CO, with all the courses coming on line in the next couple of years.
Good luck out there and have fun!

Honestly folks, I didn't do much for this except dig a little and contacted the new owners. Everyone else is doing it as well, it's just that NASA can move very fast when a situation presents itself.
The new owners weren't quite ready to announce what was happening with the track, but SCCA solo II got an inside scoop through a un-intentional meeting and the PPIR folks were pretty much forced to spill the beans.
NASA has been associated with one of the new owners for the past 8 years with a past project and we hope to work well together in the future as well.

Thanks Rick, gives me an idea of what I'm in for. I never drove PPIR before it closed.
It sounded like you were WOT coming down the banking entering into the wide turn ... is that transition between the banking and the flat surface tricky? Or just stay in it to keep the rear planted?

Brad, good question. First, remember I was driving a fully prepared race car, so what you see in the video will probably not be something that all cars can do. With that said, there is a big difference between low HP momentum cars and high HP cars at PPIR.
The low HP cars spend the entire front straight working their way up the track (drivers left to right). Coming out of T7 onto the front straight, low HP cars will keep it tucked in and start out on the flat portion of the track while the high HP cars can literlly drive up the banking out of T7. For T1, the low HP cars will pretty much aim straight at the "Dodge" sign in T1 and just as you think "wow, that wall is really close" you can dive into T1. High HP cars get such a huge run that they will have to brake and sometimes pretty hard, while the low HP cars can either brake lightly, lift to settle the car or just dive in flat out. It's hard to see in the video but the transition from banking to flat is pretty rough and can unsettle the car, so you have to watch it.
In the video, the 944 entered T1 flat out in 4th gear at 100-110 mph. In my old SVT Focus, I could do it flat in 3rd gear at about 95 mph. Take a Mustang, STI/Evo or anything with say 250+HP and you WILL have to brake for T1 cause you will be 120+ before turn in. Ask Kevin (Ker) how fast his Cobra is going before T1!!!
Once in T1, aim for a very late apex just past where the white line starts on the inside of the track surface and just prior to the grass. There is just enough time to let the car come back up to about 2/3rds track on the back straight before you turn back into the infield for the tight twisties.
Hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions. I'll see if I have any video from the SRT4s (T2 or ITE/World Challenge) from PPIR....I think I do, just need to find it and post it.

VERY COOL! This is where I got started in open tracking.
I imagine you can get some pretty high (read: scary) speeds with those banked turns in the oval.
I'm sure we'll be driving the line that Bruce shows, which does not include the banked corners. The straights are banked though. :) One consideration with the long high G sustained left hand turn that is T1 is that some of you could potentially see some oil starvation issues. Ask me, or Rick, or Kevin, how I know this. An oil temperature gauge and a real oil pressure gauge that wasn't essentially an analog idiot light in my Cobra could have spared me thousands of dollars, a year of time away from the track, and the embarrassment of driving a rental Focus on the track.

Does Labor Day Weekend mean Fri/Sat/Sun or Sat/Sun/Mon?
That Friday is going to be tough to make since the kids are in school. Monday, on the other hand would be PERFECT since the kids are out of school and I have a 4 day weekend starting on Thursday after working a set of overnight shifts. I could really use that time to catch up on sleep before a track weekend. This last one in Pueblo following the same shift really did me in.

If you check out the Z3 video, the banked portion is the front straight. The turn in for T1 occurrs on the banked portion. You dive down onto the flat long left handed turn which is essentially a very long and wide pit out lane that leads back up onto the banked back straight.
There are many, many features to expolore and discuss.

Group 1-2 will probably be front and back straight only. Not sure about Groups 3 and 4. Laps are so short though that even with passing on the front straight only, you aren't stuck behind someone for long! ;)
