Is anybody using the AMB DisplayIT setup in their car?

We've acquired the equipment needed and starting with LaJunta we will be broadcasting laptime info.

I noticed that NASA members can buy the Display IT for a 15% discount.
Go to http://www.timingroom.com/ and you can enter your NASA membership # during checkout.

Yeah, I might be tempted to buy one if it also functioned as a transponder, but it doesn't, so that's another $300+

Can we alternatively use GPS-based systems for timing, like the Traqmate discussed in the latest issue of GRM?

You can, but then it won't be official ;)

that was a big chunk of change for Dave and Revkah to purchase the new equipment/software to enable this (and I assume uploads to mylaps.com?) so THANKS!

if you want to run TT or a race, you need an AMB transponder. The DisplayIT is something that you might like to have to know real time laptimes and your position relative to others. The disadvantage is that the timing equipment has to be present so it's not likely to be usable on open track days. The Traqmate will be usable then.
cheers,
