What do I need to do for Tech Inspection for HPDE?
The tech inspection for HPDE is fairly simple and only takes about 10-15 minutes.
1. Download the form and print it out.
http://www.nasaproracing.com/images/rules-forms/form_hpde_tech.pdf
2. Take it to a recommended tech shop (http://www.nasarockymountain.com/techshops.pdf) and have them inspect your car. They will stamp the form and sign it.
3. Bring the completed and signed form to the event. We will collect it on grid before your first session and issue you a group sticker.
If your car is 100% OEM (i.e. no roll cages, alternate belts, seats, big brakes, custom fabrication, etc) - any SAE certified shop may perform the inspection.
If you are unable to get your car inspected before the event, let us know and we can arrange to have it done at the track. Avoid doing tech at the track as you may end up missing track time and it may cost you $20!!! If you live outside of the area where there are recommended shop, you do not have to pay the at track fee.

Good info. So you need to have this done at a "tech" shop. Is there a cost with the inspection? Is one inspection good for a season or just that race?
Lastly, can I pick a car #? Or is one assigned to me.
Rich.

In general the shops don't charge for the HPDE inspection, however please call for an appointment and work to their convienience since they are doing it for free. I'll get the list of approved shops posted soon.
You will need to get the quick inspection done for each event. If your car has a race or time trial logbook and it has gone through an annual inspection, you do not need the pre HPDE inspection.
For HPDE it is no big deal - Go ahead and pick your number, any 3 digit # is fine.

I see you found one in NM. I have to take the car to the Porsche dealer next week and they agreed to do the Tech Inspect at n/c. I'll use the form provided and have them complete and sign.

Since the dealer isn't a "certified" shop, we'll still do our inspection at the track. At a miniumum, I'm sure these guys will make sure theat everything will be ready for us.
If anyone else is more than 60 miles from a tech shop, this is a good route to go.

Should I not take the time for the dealer to perform the inspection and complete the form and just have this done at the track? If so what time do I need to get to the track so as not to lose any track time?

I'm concerned about the line on the tech form that says, "fluid leaks - oil, fuel, water."
My car has a slight oil leak, coming from either my valve cover or turbo (possibly both). It doesn't leak anything significant on the road (that I know of), and it only leaves a few 1" diameter oil drips on the pizza box on my garage floor when it's parked after being driven.
Is this going to be a tech inspection problem?
Also, the numbers "at least 10" tall" - my autox magnetics aren't that big, and plus I"m not sure I'd trust them at HPDE speeds. I assume I can just apply them with blue masking tape (on a white car) when I get to the event? Same for the tape over the lights?
welcome.
i will chime in here and let dave correct anything i may miss.
the numbers are easy. blue masking [not duct ;) - db] tape (the width works well) on a white car will doo just fine.
the leak may be problematic (but the tech shop will give you a determination).
the problem with a leak of any kind is that it will leave fluid on the track. on the road this is not a big deal but becomes a hugh deal on the track because of the higher speeds. it takes very little fluid (other than water) to cause other cars on the track to unexpectedly slide, spin, or otherwise become out of control. then add to this the group 4 and racer folks and you have the potential for damage as these folks may be running side-by-side and one of them hit a "slick" spot.

Fair enough. Thanks for the reply ker. I'll see what Art at Catalyst has to say.
Worst case scenario, I guess I can run my Civic. No leaks at all on that bad boy (but body parts might fly off at 100+ mph). :p

Oil Drips: A small amount will probably be ok, but if you seem to be dripping while the car is running it may be an issue. If you think the car may drip after running, bring that pizza box (or other drip pan;)) to put under the car in the paddock. Oil/Fuel spills on the asphalt or dirt are bad for the surface and the environment and will incur my wrath...
I suggest running by the car wash and spraying out the engine compartment. Find the leak and protect your engine - if it's critical, you'll want to know about it. One last thought - bring an extra quart of oil with you just in case you need to top off the car.
Numbers: 10" height is the minimum, but if you show up with 8" numbers that are visible - nobody is going to take a tape measure to it and send you packing. A small amount of masking tape over the leading edges will prevent the magnetics from lifting off at speed.
Tape over lights: It is recommended, but not required for HPDE.

Question concernign tires
My Cobra currently has 2 different sets of tires on it. I replaced only the front 2 when I purchased as the rears were still in great condition. Both sets of tires have lots of treadlife left in them and show no signs of abnormal wear.
Is it going to a problem that the 4 tires are not a matching set? I know this isn't optimal but will it be a problem?

Correct, not ideal but no problem as far as tech.

Does the car need to have an inspection prior to every HPDE in a given season?
Thanks,

All HPDE cars need to have a tech done before they go on track. It's most convienient to drop by one of the tech shops http://www.nasarockymountain.com/techshops.pdf before the event. No cost and it takes about 5 minutes.
I'll update the list as we just added a few more.

Just an FYI to anybody in the northern colorado area. Poudre Sports Car does tech inspections 10 days prior to the event on a scheduled evening.
They were able to accomodate me as I had parts coming in late, but for those of us up north using Poudre Sports Car, the car should be in a state to pass tech by 10 days prior to event so you can make their scheduled tech evening.

It's not a bad idea to do so; but it is not required for HPDE Classes.

Please try to have your HPDE car inspected prior to the race weekend. As many of you know, Saturday am is a very busy time at the tech trailer. You can save yourself time on race day by having your car inspected at one of the HPDE tech inspection shops. :)

Hello all,
I just joined NASA in March and will be making the trip over to MMP for the June 13th HPDE-1. I live in Carbondale, CO and the approved Tech garages in Colorado are about a 7 hour round trip from here. Would it be possible to get my car teched the morning of the event? I would prefer to have it done before arrriving friday morning but I can not come up with a practical way to accomplish this. Any one have any suggestions? Thanks, and I am looking forward to meeting you all on the 13th.

Hi, Mitch. We can tech-inspect your car for HPDE at the track. Normally an on-track HPDE inspection costs $20, but since you live so far from a tech shop, we will waive the fee for you. When you get to the track, look for the tech inspection signs and we'll take care of you. See ya on the 13th!

mitch, i would suggest you get a tech sheet and go over your car before you head out to mmp (including checking your wheel bearings by rocking your wheels with your hands). nothing worse than getting to the track and failing tech and not allowed on the track.

everyone looking for a Track Tech at any of our events should make sure that everything loose in the car including floor mats, spare tires, jacks and tools are removed and battery terminals covered before they come to Tech and that the tech form should be filled out BEFORE you get to tech.
not doing the above will result in no tech at that time and you will have to come back to do it again.

Andrew, if you know of a good shop in your area that is qualified to perform tech inspections, we can discuss with them to see if it makes sense to add them to the list of authorized inspection shops.
Just a reminder for all HPDE participants, HPDE inspections (not race inspections) should be performed at no charge, as a courtesy service by an authorized inspection shop. If you are charged for an HPDE inspection by a shop on our list of authorized inspection shops, please inform David or me.
