View Full Version : Hpde 1
Just joined NASA. I plan on registering for the HPDE 1 event in May for HPR. I am curious on what the schedule is like, i.e., class time, track time and one to one instructor time is like for two days?

Welcome aboard! Typically, the schedule is all hands-on at the track.
Many drivers will share information on what line to hold, but the instructors will also provide such.
As for time on / off the track, have a look at the April schedule @ PPIR.
It's a mimick replica of what's to be expected at all the NASA events:

Others will fill in with more info. Again, welcome!

I'm at Wads/470 and a fellow Audi guy. If you want someone to talk with about it over a beer or something let me know.

Glad to see another Audi out being used. My car is on display with a supercharged RS4 in the Avalon booth at the Denver Auto Show, so I won't be at the PPIR event. If you go to the show, make sure you stop by the booth and say hi!

Welcome to NASA,
In HPDE Group 1, you can assured of on-on-one instructor time in the car as well as semi-formal classroom time (or tent time) each morning. Each HPDE group will have at least 4, 20 minute run sessions daily, and each session is followed by a mandatory 'download session' where you discuss how the session went, ask questions, and make observations with your fellow Group 1 & 2 participants. Passing is restricted to certain areas of the track and allowed only with a point-by (from the leading car), so there's no need to be concerned about over-aggressive drivers while you're learning the track.
We highly recommend that you read and understand the HPDE section of the 'Club Codes and Regulations' (CCR), which can be found here:
http://www.nasaproracing.com/rules/ccr.pdf
At the very least, please understand the meanings of each flag (found is Section 7.0 of the CCR) as some of them have different meanings at NASA events than you might otherwise assume. About one week prior to the event you'll get a 'Welcome Letter' that contains the schedule and other pertinent information (please print out your schedule and bring it with you to the track). Chief Instructor, Kevin Rogers, may also send some driving tips and a primer via email prior to the event. You'll also need a signed tech sheet for your car from one of the authorized NASA tech shops:

Beyond that, remember to bring plenty of water, snacks and sunscreen, and plan to have a lot of fun in a safe, controlled environment. If you want more, simply ask here on the forums or check out some of the great HPDE articles found on the main NASA website:

Again, welcome to NASA!

Joel covered the basics. I'll just add that your instructor is available to you anytime for one-on-one instruction, in and out of the car. In fact, we encourage our instructors to meet with their students prior to the first time on track to go over some of the basics items such as basic driving physics and seating position.
Also, depending on a number of factors, you may get more driving time than the standard 4 20 minute sessions. If you look at schedules from past events, you'll see that we've offered sessions up to 30 minutes in length. Regardless of the number of sessions, you'll almost always get at least 80 minutes of track time per day.
As a fellow Audi driver, it will be good to see representation by the four rings out there on the track.
