Greetings all! I am new to the world of NASA, and am planning on attending the HPDE 1 portion of this event. I have a couple of questions around this:
1. Cost - How much do the HPDE 1 events cost?
2. Car markings - do I need to run markings (car number and what not) to do the HPDE 1?
3. Tires - I currently have two options - my Hoosier A6s or my Goodyear Eagle F1s. Which would be the better choice?
4. Safety gear - Other than the helmet, is anything specifically required? I do have seats and harnesses in the car already.
5. Brakes - Will Hawk HPS pads be sufficient for the HPDEs? If not, I'm looking at the StopTech Club Race, but would like to push that expenditure to next year.
Hmmmmmm, I think that's it for now. Thanks all!
Ian

IAN ... WELCOME !!!!!!
We are all glad to help and give you lots and lots of info. what type of driving have you done? What will you be driving ? That will help us aim the right direction when we start firing off all this info at you! Also what is your goal (what do you want to get out of this) ie. do you want to race wheel to wheel someday? or TT or have fun in HPDE3 (my place) ?
1 cost depends on the track Miller Motorsports park was AWESOME but co$t more ... Lajunta costs less but .....
so cost depends on the track .
2. yep you need numbers.
3 tires... well different strokes for different folks lets get more info from you first.
4 long pants and closed toe shoes.. need car info.

Hi Chuck. Thanks for the response. I currently run with SCCA Solo II program in Street Modified, and have done a few track days with my car. My goal is to run either the USTCC (if I want to de-tune my car) or the GTS Challenge in the 2008 season. I will be driving this: MY 02 GTI (http://www.rmcb5.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=39618#39618).
As for numbers, how do I get one assigned? Is that a trackday assignment for the HPDE participants, or are the assignments ~permanent?
I am SOOOO looking forward to the next couple of years!!

Ian, I recommend using your street tires in order to learn how to drive the car before doing r-comps. I am faster on my r-comps, but I learn more on my street tires. I bring both to practice on both, but you get more feedback from the regular tires, which lets you know when you're not driving properly.
Those pads should be fine. I've used stock pads, stock rotors, stock calipers, and stock lines with good fluid at most of my events. Granted, the Evo brakes are pretty stout, but I didn't upgrade the pads until the most recent event (Hawk HP+).
When you register, you just pick a number with some alternates, and you will get first come;first serve.
I guess if you're going to this event, I can't ask to borrow your trailer! :p

You can ask, but you won't like the answer ;) :D Thanks for the feedback. I will do the event on the Goodyears.
On the numbers, is it just numbers, or are there class identifiers that are needed also?

Hey, welcome, the more the merrier :)
Do you have the correct type of helmet? When I started in March I was really surprised to find out that there are not many places in the Denver area that sell road race helmets.
Don't worry too much about the numbers, most people just use blue painters tape, it looks silly but this is not a car show :) And NASA will provide the stickers for all kinds of things...

No class identifiers when you're in HPDE - just a number - although I think I remember Revkah mentioning that the there were supposed to be 3 digits in the number with the first digit indicating the HPDE level (e.g. 1-4).

I have an SA2000 open face helmet. From what I've read of the rules that should be fine. I ordered it online since I couldn't find one locally.

You're back from CA?! How was it? I just got finished with ILG. They got bought by EMC^2, and EMC did not want a Managed Services division. We've all been acquired by CH2M Hill.
The VDub is comin' out!! You should take a look the link above - it's undergone a few changes.
