Well it might seem too soon but if your interested in going racing next year now is the time to start thinking about a car. I think 944-spec is a great place to start.

I took the job of 944-SPEC regional director in the middle of 2006. My job was to show racing can cost less and be fun. I really want to grow this class for next year and I have a goal of 5 cars at each event. why 5 ... thats the point where we get money from TOYO. Who gets the money... we all will. not just the fastest car. I hope to get a regional sponsor and we are looking at a few sponsors on a nation wide scale.

Why 944-SPEC ... simple it's low cost close racing. When a class of car has a tight set of rules it leaves little room for "improving" the car so all of the cars are nearly the same. in 944-SPEC we all run the same tire, brakes, transaxle, engine, ....car. so whats left is driver skill.

Next year I hope NASARM will have a national 944-SPEC race at Miller ! We could have 20+ 944-SPEC cars !!! depends on sponsorship. I think we have over 100 cars built or in build nation wide.

but I really want 5. so here is what i have done. I have 4 (number 5 is on it's way) Porsche's all of them are 1988 models (last year legal for 944-spec) as of now 2 are 944's and 2 are 924S's. My grey car is complete the other cars need some work. what I'm thinking is if you want to race next year lets get going on building you a car. Is does not need to be complete build just legal to race (safety stuff). these cars cost as little as $1300 ! if we put in a autopower bolt in cage for $700 we could have you a car ready to race for under $3000. For $3000 it might not be the best looking or fastest car out there but, if your driving it around 4 other cars wheel to wheel I bet it won't make a big difference. when the year is over and you want to move up a class .... I don't think it would be hard to get your money back. We could do the work at my house and we could build 1 car in a weekend or over a couple of weekends. I am not looking to make money at this (I don't want to loose any).

So who is up for some low cost close racing?

??? how much does it cost ? per day. good question. check out this thread.

http://www.nasaforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=56035&highlight=#56035

??? But I don't have a trailer. Ok no problem all of my cars are street legal ! including my complete grey car. yep it still has the cat in it !
or you could buy a used tow dolly like the one I had at pueblo (I could even rent you one at a low low price or rent one from U-haul). with a tow dolly you only need a 1/2 ton truck or a SUV to pull it.

... WOW chuck ! this sounds like FUN me and my buds all want to build cars can you get us more than 4 ? Why yes I can or you could check out "craigslist.com denver" . there are like 10 944's for sale right now. call them up go check it out then make an offer. (I made that one up It kind of sounded like David Dirks huh )

How about some pictures . Sure I will post them ASAP or check out the others.

Do I really sound like that??

Spec 944 does sound like a lot of fun. The plan for next year is to rent one of your cars, then perhaps a Spec Miata, to see if a dedicated track car is really worth doing...especially on our limited budget. Michelle and I get our "fix" quite well in the Corvette, so another option would be just to rent periodically if I wanted to race.

The first obstacle is getting my competition license. Then I can come out and play!!

??? should i learn to drive on higher HP cars or lower ?
I saw this on a different forum today.

"I think it is pretty well established that low HP cars (LHP) will teach you to be a better driver. That is likely because of two factors. First, they don't have the power to scare you to death. Second, you are more likely to come to the realization that to be fast you have to keep your foot in it. You are not so easily fooled by straight line speed into to thinking you are quick... because there ISN'T any!

Higher HP cars (HHP) always have the potential to get you in trouble. Some people deal well with it, some never learn. Probably a lot of the guys that do learn to handle it cut their teeth in LHPs!

With the HHP, it's down to nerve and setup. The nerve thing is to some extent learned, but mostly inate. Setup takes time. When you get to the point where you want to power a HHP car through the turns, your setup becomes more critical, or perhaps more appropriately, needs to change. You need to change the balance of the car from the neutral settings that make you most comfortable and quick at a linear pace, and set the car up to understeer more than you would normally care to have."

so start with a 944-spec or spec miata (Dave has one for sale) then go race with the Dudes or Kevin !

dead on chuck. start with the lhp and learn to drive the line. driving a hhp car is a very different driving style (not just car prep) to handle the hhp and stay out of trouble (hhp is very easy to get into trouble with before you learn to drive)

maybe instead of "nerve", in my case is lack of smarts? :)

I think you are right on the money Chuck. I probably too should have started with lhp. I would have handled my car probably better sooner. But I am a Adrenaline junkie and like to pucker a little before I go farming.
I think it is a great idea to start small bore and learn driving skills. I just like the fact that I can mature with my car a little more. I think nasa is a great place to start because no matter if you are a little timid, or a little on the phsycho side, there is a place for you here at a very good price.
I wish I would have not waited so long to race.
It is the best stress releif I have ever found.
So if anybody wants to just give it a try, Chuck or Raybob can hook you up.:D :D

Very interesting... I was actually looking at 944 Spec just the other day. I've wanted a 944 for a long time now, and it just so happens that I am planning to dump $2-3k into my current car in early 2007, so now I'm kind of playing with the idea of diverting those funds to a 944 Spec project. I also know a few other 944 fans, so I have linked them to this thread.

From looking at the specs, it would appear that a 1988 944 is the car to get, since it has the most powerful engine with the short 5th gear... is that correct? Are there any pros/cons with using a 924S instead? Also, where are you finding these cars for so cheap? Klode? Autotrader didn't look too promising.

Correct the 1988 in stock form is closer to a maxed out 944-spec race car. The engine has 1/2 point higher compression and the short 5th gear (when you use it) is mandatory to win. The 88 also has longer lower control arms. Down side to a 88 is the frame seems to weigh more than the early cars. All parts can be swaped between years as long as you maintain track width. Now comes the tricky part... the 924S has the same/better engine in 1988 and the short 5th and... it weighs less than a 944. Now here is the big gottcha The 924S does not have fender flares so it is more aerodynamic (cuts through the air <--- gotta keep it simple in case the SU group is reading) but it has less track width....
The So Cal guys tend to say a 1988 924S is the "best" 944-spec car, maybe cause they have more high speed tracks or Cal speedway is there biggest event.

Because I am the regional director I must say "all cars are pretty much the same" this is a drivers class not a builder class so Todd out at Miller with a non 88 car can pretty much whip me cause he is better on his home track than my 88/skill can make up for.
Over the last year I have been buying these cars when ever and where ever I could 2 from craigs list and 2 from ebay and 1 from rennlist. I will sell them at cost.

I have been watching Klode but I'm only buying 1988's and none have come up this year.

Sounds very good. I can't commit yet, but I have room to keep a 3rd car and I'm seriously considering this. I know that Chris Venturini is pretty interested as well, along with possibly one or two more people that I know. I'm thinking I'll save up my funds this winter and should be in a position to easily jump on any good deals that come along in December or January... Then I'll just have to figure out how to drive a RWD car... :o

As far as licensing goes, what all do I need to do to upgrade my Time Trials license to a race license? I know that with SCCA, I just needed to do one of their "DS" days to get my permit, but I haven't heard any clear explaination about what NASA's proceedure is. Chris is also wondering how long it would take him to go from HPDE 2 to the race group?

Thanks for the info

no pressure to jump on this good deal but I don't think your going to find a better car for less than i'm selling mine but there will always be low cost porsche 944's on craigslist and the year is not that big of a deal. so no hurry to get one of these.

moving to a race license from time trail is going to be made easy next year in NASARM we will put on a school... more info to come on that. from HPDE 2 to racing might require 1 more event but we will "fast track" anyone that wants to go racing . John Clark did this moving up one step each event. there is also the option of going to a race school that nasa accepts.

i will start a different thread for our race school.

Yeah, I was surprised at how little these cars are going for these days. I assume the interior is shot and the body is a bit rough, but it's not like I'll care too much about that. You'll be the first person I talk to when I'm ready to pick up a car... that should be early January.

By the way, how much of an issue would the 5th gear be at tracks like PMI and La Junta? I'm having trouble finding a decent source of gear ratio info, and I'm also not sure what speeds to expect on those tracks in a 944. What speeds do you see on the main straight and the back straights at PMI?

svochuck
10-30-2006, 10:16 AM
Short 5th for NASARM only will make a difference at Miller. Hastings and lajunta do not need it at all, pueblo does use 5th but only for a few seconds so it's not a big deal. Also I was talking to 3 other guys at a PCA event on Sunday and one of them was saying the 1988 computer pulls timing in the heat of racing so that it does not have a power advantage....

Black 924S is the one I'm keeping for now...?

Grey 944-spec is sold I think $9500.

Plus, the ad says they could deliver it up to 300 miles. So, if anyone buys this car, they could have it deliverd to me and I'd be willing to help get it to the Denver area. Let me know. That's the one that comes with the Koni Shocks, right? How do they compare to the Koni part numbers listed in the rules? Are they the same? Being a factory option, would they would be legal to add to any 944-spec? I had come across some M030 shocks on eBay a few days ago and they seemed like they were going for fairly cheap.

By the way, I spotted an '88 924S on Craigslist for $1500 OBO... http://denver.craigslist.org/car/228386283.html

I have a grey (i bet it has a special porsche name) 1988 944-spec race car for sale. To all of yall I will sell it at my cost and we could configure it a few different ways.

"as is" it is just about a full blown "built to spec" 944-spec. $9300ish

we could swap out parts and remove some items to get it down to around $8000. or we could remove more items that i would not recomend for a price near $6000.

i will post it in classifieds soon with more info.

Hi Chuck (and others) thought you might want to check this out http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp?tracktype=usedcc&searchType=21&paId=205267898&pageNumber=0&numResultsPerPage=50&largeNumResultsPerPage=0&sortorder=descending&sortfield=PRICE+descending&certifiedOnly=false&recnum=6&leadExists=true&criteria=K-%7CE-%7CM-_41_%7CD-_389_%7CN-N%7CR-250%7CI-1%7CP-PRICE+descending%7CQ-descending%7CZ-87571&aff=national

Selling Points: Vehicle is in good condition considering it is a 22 year old driver. Mechanically sound: engine uses no oil, transmission shifts great, steering doesn't pull, brakes great. Prior owner installed a roll bar and 5 point safety belts. Other than that it is just good Porsche for not a lot of money.

I had to copy that, apparently this owner doesn't agree with the roll cage, hmmmm....

True, true. I'm thinking it has something to do with my affinity for Mercury Capris...the bubble back glass, spoiler and flared fenders...mmmm!

Or, maybe I'm just kidding myself and it's merely my low budget attempt at becoming more "Ryanesque" in a futile attempt to fulfill my teenage desire of attracting Molly Ringwald. OK...now I've said too much.

now that picture says it all ... that Porsche just looks too good. as for the merc... when i did my SVO road racer I did have the merc fenders on it but, i don't think i did it for any other reason than wide tires.

"OK...now I've said too much." yep.

As I mentioned on the national forum, I recently picked up a red '83 944 for my 944-spec car. It looks like we're going to need some different colors in our region though...

Sorry Rick the only 924's allowed are the "S" model 1987 and 1988...

or were you just kidding?

I'm thinking if Rick had that car then out ran me on the track, man o man I would just sell my 944-spec and go race SU.

So if the inside AND the outside is padded, can you get a waiver to not have to use a roll cage?

we might have a new 944-spec racer coming soon.... John Taylor (no relation) is coming to look at my red car and he wants to race it...
so we have the
1,2 "porsche twins"
3 john taylor
4 "the red rat"
5 Geoffery Schilling
6,7,8 PCA racers that might come out.

9,10,11 my 3 cars.

10 racers at Pueblo would be awesome ! I would be real happy with 5.
