View Full Version : Anyone with a CMC car?

I am looking towards building a CMC car since I just happen to have an '85 Mustang GT roller in my driveway. This seems like the lowest cost way for me to go racing and to work towards acquiring a competition license. I don't think my budget will allow me to build an AI or AIX car.
How many other folks out there have an intent to participate in CMC?

I hope to get at least 3 or 4 CMC cars to show in the first year. If it takes off like it did in Texas, we'll see 15 to 20 cars in just a few short years.

Done.
I checked over there, but I started asking questions here since the NASA Rocky Mountain forums seemed like they needed a little more traffic and I was trying to gauge interest and activity in this region.
I hope I can manage to get the car built this year.

It would be so eay for someone to get into CMC right now. Here's a quick west coast car that is for sale. They were asking $10k back in September. I bet they've discounted it since then.

Heres another future CMC car/racer.
RichV and I have been discussing the possibility of us fielding a CMC mustang in the future.
I've been reading over the rule's and trolling the CMC forum's while pitching the idea to Rich.:D
I also have a few sponsor's lined up if we decided to build a car for CMC. I'll save the detail's after we decide on what we are going to do.

Sweet. I take it this will be the teal car at the last PMI event.
Rich, Scott, and I where the guys parked right accross from you guys with the white Saleen and the mystic cobra.
That makes three car's.
Have you found any other AI guys to play with in the RM region yet? AI is way out of our league as far as experience is concerned.

Yea Dude, Teal car from PMI. CMC is cool cuse its like spec miata with F bodys and Mustangs. No big dollar improvements just a cage, seat and other safety stuff and go out and race. Good way to race American V8 cars without goin broke. The Red 93 Z28 that was at PMI will be a AI car next year and my buddy Tommy has a 95 Trans Am AI car also. I run a 96 SS Camaro that is black and you should see Coreys 91 Z28 AI Camaro at Miller. So we are off to a killer start for next year for sure. I didn't get a chance to meet you guys cuz I had to instruct and shake down my Camro when I had an extra minute. I look forward to racin with ya.

Who is selling the A Sedan that is listed in the Denver Post? They are asking $5k for it, $7k with a trailer.
That seems like a damn cheap way to get your foot into AI.

I'll have to look into that. Depending on the mods done to the car we may be able to knock it down to CMC spec. AI is the ultimate goal but I feel more comfortable starting with a CMC car and moving up at a later date.

Thats cool. How big doese the CMC field need to be.
Steeda has something similar but you have to use there 5 link which is not legal for CMC IF I read the rules correctly.

I've owned a 87 Irocz 5.7 auto, a 89 Ttop 2.8 RS auto and a 91 Z28 5.0 5spd car.

It looks like most of the contingency money is for AI, but some manufactures mention CMC...specifically Griggs, and J&M...probably because they have a specific panhard bar and lower control arm suspension system we CMC folks can use instead of picking and choosing from Steeda's 5-link pieces.
Check it out here (http://americanironracing.com/contingency). There's plenty for the F-body crowd.

For inspiration, here's (http://www.bns-racing.com/89CMC.htm) a web site dedicated to a '89 Mustang LX CMC buildup. Good stuff. Bonus points are awarded for finding all the "illegal" stuff on (or not on) the car on it's maiden voyage to the track. I guess it passed "tech", so what do I know?

Illegal.
1. Underdrives
2. Slotted orotrs
3. Cobra brakes
4. FMS balancer.
These are the four that I "think" are illegal but not 100% sure about.

He was the Texas CMC Champion in '04 and '05.
It appears many items were fixed between that initial track outing and those championships.

At first glance I came up with "Cobra" brakes (although according to the current rules, you can use the same Mach1 and Bullitt calipers since they don't say "Cobra" on them with rotors that are machined smaller), slotted rotors, TA aluminum rear diff cover, 17" rims, required stickers.
I didn't see a master switch or fire system, but those could have been in there somewhere.
The FMS balancer and underdrives should be OK. The rules say, "Engine accessory drive pulleys and belts may be replaced with any non-tooth drive belt and appropriate pulleys providing doing so does not boost horsepower or torque above the allowed maximum figures."
