I'm looking at building a CMC car.

1. Where do all of you prefer to buy the required Toyo Proxis RA-1 tires.

2. I was kind of bummed about not being able to run a 17" wheel. What brand/type of 16" wheel do you prefer to run? Am I correct in assuming that 5-lug is preferable over 4-lug.

Tread Depth = 8
Overal Dia. = 26.06
Overall Width = 10.4
Static Load Radius = 11.7
Max Pressure = 44
Revs Per Mile = 815
Tire Shaving: 13"-17" = $15ea

Shipping Charges for 16"-18" Toyo Tires to UPS Zone 5:$68

Total cost for future comparison, unshaved, shipped to my door = $708

I am working to find a local Toyo dealer who can shave and supply the RA-1 in all the sizes we need. This would include trackside service as well.

it is odd how the various toyo dealer's prices fluctuate by tire size (ie. one is not cheaper across the board).
www.europartsnet.com has 205/50-15 (my size) for $115 but their 255/50-16 is $180

frisby tire has the 205/50-15 for $130 but 255/50-16 for $160

I have also had good service from
http://www.bmwwheels.com/bmwwheels_toyo_tires.asp
Their prices are $122 and $167 for the tire sizes above.

maybe it depends on what race series are popular in their locality for volume.
cheers,
bruce

An initial group buy sounds good...but I wonder if that could be tied into getting something set up with a local Toyo dealer who can provide the trackside support?

Nobody has mentioned wheels yet. Are there any preferences? 4 lug/5 lug on the Foxbodies?

You are Correct Dude, Frisby is in the Midwest where there s a Huge American Sedan etc Class. Back when I raced small bore I got Toyo from Vilven Tire, They were about the best deal around on them little tires.

i have purchased slicks from discount tire in the past but there website does not list toyo as one of there brands ... but i guess they special ordered slicks so they should be able to get toyos.
if someone can get us a great price/group buy i'm in for 8 tires.

re: wheels -
I bought ASA JS5 wheels from Tire Rack, online, for my SN95 Mustang; 5 lug. Quite a few of the Texas guys run this wheel, as well as folks in Calif. However, I think the wheels are on backorder right now, and have been for awhile.

The wheels were $116 each, plus shipping, when I bought them in 2005.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I'm wondering if a local dealer was ever found. Thanks.

Edit: Eeesh, I just saw this sticky. http://www.nasarockymountain.com/nasa_forums/showthread.php?t=193
Maybe I should pay a visit to my optometrist before Pueblo. :o

Um, we've already built a CMC car (its orange and black). What, you gonna break our contract and go solo (oops, didnt mean to include the word solo)? What are you doing on yours that we arent doing on mine? Something fishy is going on here  ;)

You should check the date that Scott wrote that and remember we're in 2008, not 2006. :D :D

Attention knuckledraggers:

What kind of shaving of the tires (depth) are you all doing? I talked with George (per Dave and Kevin recommendation) and he's gonna get my tires. He asked about how much shaving I wanted done to them, I have no clue so I'll have to call him back.

Anyway, I'm a novice with the car and would think I should go pretty conservative or near stock? Opinions needed. I'd like to use this set of tires the entire year if possible.

I would run them 4/32 for Pueblo cause it is like sand paper.

At mid-ohio I ran 3/32 cause they are faster, I heard of some guys running 2/32.

The kids ran all year on full tread.

As a couple others have suggested, you might also check Tire Source in Boulder.
The owner Pete does tires and alignments for many Denver area race car drivers
and driving enthusiasts, and you wouldn't have to pay shipping charges. He also
has an in-house tire shaver, and has years of tire shaving experience, so could
set you up for whatever depth you want.

FYI it's also a family-owned business at which Pete, his wife, and son all work.

Dave,
I've run my fastest lap at Pueblo on Toyos shaved 3/32".
Since you are a rookie you could probably run all season on full treads.

Well, it looks like the supplier that George is getting my tires from has a set already shaved (4/32) that someone else ordered then cancelled. So, I'm saving a bit by getting them already shaved. Thanks for all the input, I'll be interested to see if these tires will last me a season or not.

Is $189 a tire reasonable with or without shaving? I'm getting 225/50ZR16's.

$189 shaved and shipped is what I pay.
