Why do I have to have a roll bar in a convertible?

Why does NASA make me have a roll bar in a convertible? I have a hardtop , isn't that good enough?

No.... lucky would be doing it in a convertible with no roll bar.

This guy planned on the possibility that he could screw up and put in roll over protection.

This video got posted on miata.net too. Carnage pics here:

http://forum.miata.net/vb/showpost.p...7&postcount=11

He has the same roll bar I have in my Miata, so I was glad to see that piece withstand the roll over. The hard top came off when the windshield frame hit and bent. Miata hardtops are made out of fiberglass and NOT STRUCTURAL, the report is it was broken clean in half or more pieces from the impact.

Check out the broken wheel in the pics. What apparently happened is the car went off sideways into mud. The mud actually grabbed with enough force to rip the rim off the spokes of the wheel and send the car tumbling.

I didn't need more convincing, but harness and racing seat bolted as low to the floor as I can stand are in my near future. He was tossed around pretty good even with those items. I don't even want to think about what it would have looked like with a stock seat and 3pt. belt.

It sounds like he had only the front latched, not the sides. There's discussion going on here about it.

And even a reason to get a H&N device of some sort to go with those 5 point belts even they aren't required for TT.

which is why we teach "drive off" the track if possible.

what i can't tell from the video is if he put "both feet in" and if he had, would he have stayed on the paved surface for the spin (which is what tends to happen, assuming you recognize it early enough - and that in itself is an experience thing) flame on for those who disagree
